When A Noise Is All You Got

Sometimes it's hard to worship God. Some days the energy just isn't there. Maybe you are like me and feel like if you can't give your best, than what's the use? Maybe you come to church on Sunday and feel like God skipped you when he was handing out the pretty voices. Maybe you wonder what gifts you possess that you God could possibly want. It can be discouraging when we go to present our offerings before the Lord either on Sunday or during the week and instead of gold, frankincense, or myrrh we have ragged nerves, a distracted mind, and maybe 10 minutes here and there to give.

But even in this God is gracious. While God does call us to be holy, our worship of Him isn't dependent on our perfection. If that were the case we would never be able to worship God. He also doesn't call us to only give only what we would consider beautiful and worthy. As Psalm 51 says, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."

One of the Psalms that I love in regards to this theme is Psalm 100. In its opening verse we read, "Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!" We don't read "Make a beautiful song" or "Make a noise that everyone loves." It is simply a joyful noise. That speaks to the heart making the noise. It is a heart bursting to worship, overflowing with praise. It reminds me of the sound trees make when the wind blows or the fall of steady rain. It points us to the beauty of a bird singing or of a frog croaking. All of these are beautiful to God's ears because the are a joyful noise coming to Him from His creation.

So, will you join with creation today? Maybe a noise is all you can muster. Maybe you don't think it is all that pretty or worthy of an awesome God. But will you still lift it to Him in worship?

Why I Believe in Infant Baptism: Opening Thoughts

What images come to mind when you think of infant baptism? Is it a sacred ritual done with pomp and circumstance with robes and a gold plated dish of water? Is it a routine ceremony that is a regular part of your worship? Is it a crazy belief some of "those" people believe in, but certainly not someone serious about Bible study? Do you have images of a child being held up before the church like Simba in The Lion King? Is it just a glorified baby dedication? I think I've had all of the above mentioned thoughts at one time or another throughout my time as a Christian. I've believed the stereotypes and didn't really study it too hard on my own. But, once I did, I came to some revelatory conclusions, at least for me. I wasn't raised to believe in infant baptism. I grew up as a baptist, meaning that I believed what most baptists believe. Sunday Singables: "You Are God Alone"

"You Are God Alone (Not a God)"  by Philips, Craig, and Dean, released on Let the Worshippers Arise (2004) Why I recommend this song for worship- As we come before the Lord in worship, it is important to remember Who we are worshiping. We aren't coming before a famous singer or venerated politician. We aren't about to see our favorite sports team play. This is God we are addressing. This song reminds us of who God is and why He is worthy of our worship. It takes the focus off us and fixes our eyes on the Father. The melody honors the lyrics and lets us build on different themes emotionally and musically.
