Sunday Singables: "Come, People of the Risen King"

"Come, People of the Risen King" by Keith and Kristyn Getty and Stuart Townend (2009), released by the Getty's on Awaken the Dawn


Why I recommend this song for worship-

 We typically use this song as a call to worship. After all, the words themselves are a call to come and worship the Lord. The Getty's do a wonderful job with this one, making the melody very singable and having verses with deep content and a chorus that is simple and calls us to rejoice. Sometimes, a song may have just the good content in the lyrics or just an emotionally charged, yet very simple chorus. I love how this song has both. Our minds are charged up with the truths of our salvation, the unity we have in Christ, and the rest all find as we worship God, then we are able to rejoice because of those truths in the chorus. Sometimes I do this with two separate songs, like singing Thy Mercy, then going right into something like I Love You, Lord to respond to what was just sung. This particular song, like many others, allows for both of these elements in the same song.

 Changes I've Made-

I haven't really changed any of the lyrics or the feel of the song. When we sing this in our church, we usually add a measure in between the verses and chorus, just to catch our breath a bit before we sing again. On the lead-sheet below, I've also marked a key-change that you could do for the final verse, but that takes the melody up to an E which might be high for some congregations. Lately, we've been skipping the key-change and just singing the whole song in C. I've also simplified the chords a bit and copied it into an easier key. The recording is a full-step lower than the song below, which is a little low for the congregation and harder to play for the amateur guitarist.

    Looking back and looking up! "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well" (Julian of Norwich) I can't remember when I first heard those words of sudwell resinof Norwich.

Sunday Singables: "You Are God Alone"

"You Are God Alone (Not a God)"  by Philips, Craig, and Dean, released on Let the Worshippers Arise (2004) Why I recommend this song for worship- As we come before the Lord in worship, it is important to remember Who we are worshiping. We aren't coming before a famous singer or venerated politician. We aren't about to see our favorite sports team play. This is God we are addressing. This song reminds us of who God is and why He is worthy of our worship. It takes the focus off us and fixes our eyes on the Father. The melody honors the lyrics and lets us build on different themes emotionally and musically. This song has always been a great reminder to me of God's sovereignty and leaves me standing in awe that He could love someone like me. Changes I've Made- I haven't adjusted too much with this one. Why I Believe in Infant Baptism: Opening Thoughts

What images come to mind when you think of infant baptism? Is it a sacred ritual done with pomp and circumstance with robes and a gold plated dish of water? Is it a routine ceremony that is a regular part of your worship? Is it a crazy belief some of "those" people believe in, but certainly not someone serious about Bible study? Do you have images of a child being held up before the church like Simba in The Lion King? Is it just a glorified baby dedication? I think I've had all of the above mentioned thoughts at one time or another throughout my time as a Christian. I've believed the stereotypes and didn't really study it too hard on my own.
