Purpose

What are enriched affections?

Over the years I have had a lot of time to think about worship. I was raised a pastor's kid, with my dad being a full-time worship pastor. In college I even developed a personal philosophy of worship. Throughout all that time, I fell in love with God and worshiped Him through music. But it is so easy to fall in love with the music we worship God with, to get caught up in the emotion of it all, and to not really know the object of our worship. Sure, what we sing may be true, but is there enough truth in it to eliminate all other objects of worship so that the only possible being we are worshipping is God?

As you broaden your perspective from music to all of life, it is easy to see how many things clamor for our affections. Technology, food, entertainment, people... distractions are everywhere. It is easy to place our affections where it is most pleasurable for us, but is that what God desires for us? For our affections to truly be uplifted and fulfilled, they must be enriched by the truth of God's Word. Just as a plant needs to dig its roots down deep and drink of the nutrients of the soil for it to produce fruit, so we need to drink deeply of God's Word in order to fulfill our desires, and to make sure we desire godly things.  As C.J. Mahaney phrased it, "If you want to feel deeply, you need to think deeply."

My goal with this blog is to look at the world through redeemed eyes and see what God is trying to do, and teach, through all of it. Whether it is a parable, an election, a new movie, or a funny thing my daughters did last week, all of it can enrich our affections if we see things through eyes of grace and eyes of faith.
